Shirodhara is the procedure in which prescribed herbal oils and medicated milk etc are poured in a continuous stream over the forehead of the patient. The duration of a ‘dhara’ is usually between 40-45 minutes. However, according to the seriousness of the disease it may take longer.
In the beginning, the patient is made to lie on his back on a droni after the preparatory application of the oil on the head and body. There will be a vessel of dhara hung 4 inches above his/her forehead and a headband is tied just above the ear level to prevent the oil flowing in to the eyes. The warm oil from the vessel is then poured smoothly and continuously through a hole at the bottom.
Shirodhara is good for insomnia, mental tension, chronic cold, sinusitis, diseases of the eyes, ears and so on.
