Not One Condition —
A Spectrum of
Spinal Concerns
Spondylosis is an umbrella term for degenerative spinal conditions. At Pranavam Ayurveda, we see patients across the full spectrum — each requiring a distinct, physician-designed approach based on the region affected, symptom pattern, and individual constitution.
Cervical Spondylosis
Degeneration of the cervical vertebrae and discs leading to neck stiffness, radiating arm pain, and reduced range of motion. Known in Ayurveda as Greeva Graha — a Vata-dominant condition of the neck region.
Greeva GrahaLumbar Spondylosis
Wear and degenerative changes in the lower spinal vertebrae causing chronic lower back pain, stiffness, and restricted movement. Described classically as Kati Shoola, associated with aggravated Vata in the lumbar region.
Kati ShoolaIVDP & Disc Concerns
Intervertebral disc prolapse and herniation causing nerve compression, radiating pain, and functional limitations. Ayurvedic treatment for suitable patients focuses on reducing nerve irritation and nourishing spinal structures.

Classical Treatments,
Individually Prescribed
No two spinal conditions are identical. The therapies below are selected and combined by our physicians based on your specific region, symptoms, and constitution — never as a fixed package.
Localised Oil Therapy
Kati Basti
Warm medicated oil is retained within a dough dam placed over the lumbar spine. The sustained heat and herbal properties of the oil are traditionally used to support lumbar vertebral health, reduce stiffness, and address chronic lower back concerns.
Classical Indication
Kati Shoola, lumbar spondylosis, disc-related lower back concerns, and Vata-dominant musculoskeletal conditions of the lumbar region.
Physician Note
Oil formulation, temperature, and session frequency are determined individually following spinal assessment and consultation.
Cervical Oil Therapy
Greeva Basti
Medicated oil retained over the cervical spine within a dough ring, specifically designed for neck region concerns. Traditionally used to support nourishment of cervical vertebrae, ease neck stiffness, and address radiating arm symptoms associated with cervical spondylosis.
Classical Indication
Greeva Graha, cervical spondylosis, neck stiffness, and radiating pain into the shoulders or arms as classically described.
Physician Note
Oil selection and duration are tailored to each patient's cervical assessment findings and symptom pattern.
Full-Body Oil Therapy
Pizhichil
Continuous warm medicated oil poured in a steady stream over the entire body by trained therapists. One of Kerala Ayurveda's most revered therapies, traditionally used to deeply nourish spinal and joint tissues, pacify Vata, and support recovery from degenerative conditions.
Classical Indication
Spinal degeneration, neurological involvement, joint conditions, and systemic Vata disorders as classically described.
Physician Note
Suitability, oil composition, and programme length are individually assessed before commencing Pizhichil.
Nourishing Bolus Therapy
Njavarakizhi
Warm boluses of medicated rice cooked in herbal decoctions are applied over the body and along the spine. Particularly valued for its tissue-nourishing properties, Njavarakizhi supports muscular strength, spinal tissues, and addresses conditions involving muscular wasting or neurological components.
Classical Indication
Muscular weakness, Asthi and Majja Dhatu nourishment, spinal degeneration with neurological involvement, and debility as classically described.
Physician Note
Number of sessions and suitability are determined based on individual clinical assessment and symptom presentation.
Panchakarma Therapy
Basti
Considered Ayurveda's most powerful Vata-pacifying treatment, Basti involves the administration of medicated preparations that act systemically on the Vata dosha. It is often the central therapeutic intervention in physician-guided spondylosis management programmes due to its deep-reaching effects on the nervous system and spinal tissues.
Classical Indication
The foremost Panchakarma therapy for all Vata-dominant conditions, including spinal, neurological, and degenerative disorders.
Physician Note
The type of Basti, herbal formulation, and schedule are individually prescribed based on detailed physician assessment.
Herbal Fomentation
Elakizhi
Fresh medicinal leaves combined with herbal powders and oils are made into heated boluses and applied along the spine and affected regions. The fomentation penetrates deeply into tissues, traditionally used to reduce stiffness, improve circulation, and ease musculoskeletal discomfort in spondylosis patients.
Classical Indication
Spinal and joint stiffness, musculoskeletal pain, and Vata-Kapha conditions affecting the back as classically described.
Physician Note
Herbal combination and fomentation intensity are tailored after individual assessment of the affected region.
Common Questions
Spine & Spondylosis
Treatment — FAQs
Answers to questions we hear most often from patients considering Ayurvedic spine care at Pranavam.
Spondylosis refers to degenerative changes in the spine's vertebrae, discs, and surrounding structures. It is common with age and may affect the cervical (neck), thoracic (mid-back), or lumbar (lower back) regions, causing pain, stiffness, or nerve-related symptoms.
Ayurveda may help support the management of spondylosis through personalised therapies, tissue-nourishing treatments, herbal medicines, and lifestyle guidance — all tailored to the individual patient following physician assessment.
Yes. Cervical and lumbar spondylosis involve different spinal regions and symptom patterns, and they require distinct therapeutic approaches. At Pranavam, treatment is planned specifically for the affected region following physician consultation.
Ayurvedic treatment for suitable patients with disc herniation or IVDP may be considered following physician assessment. Suitability depends on severity, nerve involvement, and overall health — determined individually after clinical evaluation.
Duration varies based on the severity of your condition, the extent of degeneration, and your physician's assessment. Your treating physician will advise on the recommended programme length after your initial consultation.
Bringing existing imaging reports (MRI, X-ray, CT) can assist the physician's assessment considerably. However, a thorough clinical examination will be conducted regardless of whether prior imaging is available.
Every treatment programme at Pranavam Ayurveda is personalised. No fixed packages — your therapies, medicines, and lifestyle guidance are designed after physician consultation based on your specific condition, constitution, and health history.
