Not One Concern —
A Spectrum of
Women's Health
Women's health in Ayurveda is a continuum — from the reproductive years through pregnancy and the critical postnatal period. At Pranavam Ayurveda, we care for women across this full spectrum, each requiring a distinct, physician-designed approach based on the phase of life, symptom pattern, and individual constitution.
Menstrual & Hormonal Concerns
Irregular cycles, painful menstruation, PCOS, and hormonal imbalances affecting daily life and reproductive health. Ayurveda addresses the underlying Dosha imbalances — typically involving Vata and Pitta — through personalised herbal medicine and therapeutic interventions.
Artava VyāpadaFertility & Preconception Support
Difficulty conceiving, recurrent pregnancy loss, and preparing the body for conception through Ayurvedic Rasayana and Vajikarana protocols. Classical texts give specific attention to nourishing Shukra and Artava Dhatus as foundations for healthy fertility.
Garbhini ParicharyaPostnatal Recovery
The weeks and months after childbirth are considered a critical window in Ayurveda. Traditional Sutika Paricharya — postnatal care — focuses on rebuilding strength, restoring hormonal balance, supporting lactation, and preventing postpartum depletion through tailored therapies and diet.
Sutika ParicharyaLeucorrhoea & Pelvic Health
Chronic vaginal discharge, pelvic discomfort, and related reproductive health concerns classified under Shwetapradara in classical texts. Management focuses on Kapha-Pitta pacification, local therapies, and internal herbal formulations as guided by physician assessment.
ShwetapradaraPerimenopausal Concerns
Hot flushes, mood changes, sleep disturbances, and physical transitions associated with perimenopause and menopause. Ayurveda interprets this as a Vata-predominant phase of life and offers both symptomatic relief and deeper nourishment through Rasayana and lifestyle protocols.
RajonivruttiPostpartum Mental Wellbeing
Exhaustion, emotional changes, and anxiety following childbirth are recognised in Ayurveda as manifestations of Vata aggravation post-delivery. Nourishing therapies, herbal support, and dietary guidance form the classical response to postnatal mental and physical depletion.
Manasika BalaAyurvedic Therapies
Classical Treatments,
Individually Prescribed
No two women's health concerns are identical. The therapies below are selected and combined by our physicians based on your specific phase of life, symptoms, and constitution — never as a fixed package.
Medicated Oil Massage
Abhyanga
Full-body warm medicated oil massage is a cornerstone of Ayurvedic postnatal care and women's health protocols. Regular Abhyanga is traditionally prescribed to pacify Vata, restore tissue nourishment, support hormonal balance, and ease physical and mental fatigue — particularly in the weeks following childbirth.
Classical Indication
Sutika Paricharya (postnatal recovery), Vata pacification, postpartum physical and mental fatigue, and general women's nourishment protocols.
Physician Note
Oil formulation and session structure are determined individually based on postpartum stage, constitution, and physician assessment.
Full-Body Oil Therapy
Pizhichil
Continuous warm medicated oil poured in a steady stream over the entire body by trained therapists. One of Kerala Ayurveda's most revered therapies, Pizhichil is prescribed in women's health for deep tissue nourishment, systemic Vata pacification, and recovery from significant physical depletion such as that following childbirth or prolonged illness.
Classical Indication
Systemic Vata aggravation, postpartum depletion, debility, and hormonal imbalance conditions requiring deep nourishment.
Physician Note
Suitability, oil composition, and programme length are individually assessed before commencing Pizhichil.
Nourishing Bolus Therapy
Njavarakizhi
Warm boluses of medicated rice cooked in herbal decoctions are applied over the body. Particularly valued for its Rasa and Mamsa Dhatu nourishing properties, Njavarakizhi supports tissue rebuilding after childbirth, aids lactation, and strengthens the body after periods of depletion — a classic postnatal restorative therapy in Kerala Ayurveda.
Classical Indication
Postnatal tissue restoration, muscular debility, Dhatu nourishment following childbirth, and recovery from prolonged fatigue.
Physician Note
Number of sessions and suitability are determined based on individual clinical assessment and postpartum stage.
Herbal Bolus Fomentation
Kizhi
Heated boluses containing medicinal herbs, powders, and oils are applied systematically over the body. In women's health protocols, Kizhi is used to reduce pelvic and abdominal discomfort, ease postpartum joint and musculoskeletal stiffness, and support recovery of tissue tone in the weeks following delivery.
Classical Indication
Postpartum musculoskeletal discomfort, pelvic and abdominal stiffness, and Vata-Kapha conditions affecting the lower body as classically described.
Physician Note
Herbal combination, fomentation intensity, and targeted regions are individualised after clinical assessment.
Panchakarma Therapy
Basti
Considered Ayurveda's most powerful Vata-pacifying treatment, Basti is often central to physician-guided postnatal recovery and women's health programmes. The Vata aggravation that occurs naturally following childbirth makes Basti particularly relevant — its systemic effects support hormonal regulation, nervous system recovery, and the restoration of reproductive tissue health.
Classical Indication
The foremost Panchakarma therapy for Vata-dominant conditions, including postnatal depletion, hormonal imbalance, and women's reproductive health concerns.
Physician Note
The type of Basti, herbal formulation, and schedule are individually prescribed following detailed physician assessment.
Localised Reproductive Therapy
Uttara Basti
A specialised Panchakarma procedure involving the administration of medicated oils or decoctions into the uterine cavity. Classically indicated for conditions affecting the uterus and reproductive tract, Uttara Basti is prescribed for eligible patients with leucorrhoea, certain menstrual disorders, fertility concerns, and postpartum uterine recovery — always under strict physician supervision.
Classical Indication
Uterine conditions, leucorrhoea, menstrual irregularities, fertility concerns, and postnatal uterine involution support as classically described.
Physician Note
Uttara Basti is performed only when specifically indicated following thorough physician assessment. Formulation and schedule are individually determined.
Common Questions
Women's Health &
Postnatal Care — FAQs
Answers to questions we hear most often from women considering Ayurvedic care at Pranavam.
Sutika Paricharya is the classical Ayurvedic postnatal care protocol described in the ancient texts. It encompasses specific dietary guidelines, herbal medicines, therapeutic procedures, and lifestyle practices prescribed for the mother in the weeks and months after delivery to support full physical and mental recovery.
Ideally, postnatal Ayurvedic care is initiated in the first few days after delivery. However, women who did not receive postnatal Ayurvedic support at the time of delivery can still benefit from a tailored programme — your physician will advise on the most suitable approach based on your current stage of recovery.
Ayurveda may support the management of PCOS, irregular menstruation, and hormonal imbalance through personalised herbal medicines, Panchakarma therapies, dietary guidance, and lifestyle modifications — all designed after physician assessment based on your specific Dosha imbalance and symptom pattern.
Ayurvedic postnatal care is specifically designed for the postpartum period. At Pranavam, all therapies and herbal formulations for postnatal patients are determined by a physician with full consideration of breastfeeding, the stage of recovery, and the individual's health status. Safety is assessed before any therapy is initiated.
Ayurvedic preconception protocols — drawing on classical Rasayana and Vajikarana principles — aim to optimise reproductive tissue health, balance hormones, and address underlying imbalances that may affect fertility. Suitability and approach are determined individually following physician consultation.
Classical texts recommend a minimum of 45 days for postnatal care, though programme length varies based on the nature of the delivery, current health status, and physician assessment. Your treating physician will advise on the appropriate duration after your initial consultation.
Every treatment programme at Pranavam Ayurveda is personalised. No fixed packages — your therapies, medicines, dietary guidance, and lifestyle recommendations are designed after physician consultation based on your specific condition, health history, and constitution.
